What a month! February was quite busy for me and my family but I would not have it any other way. Here are a few highlights:
- I am down below 170lbs for the first time in well over a year
- I have completed the second leg in the year of cardio (an 8k)
- I took a great trip to Iceland with my beautiful wife
- Logged my first international WOD while having the opportunity to meet 2-time World’s Fittest Woman Annie Thorisdottir
- Started the 2016 CrossFit open
So let me expand on a few of these starting with the 8k. It is a strange distance when you measure it in kilometers but it roughly equals 5 miles (about 200 yards short) so this was quite the test for me in my running without running training regiment. I have done a few short sprints but most of my training has involved me and a rower along with my normal CrossFit workouts. I found a fun little run for $5 with the DC Road Runners (https://www.dcroadrunners.org/) which allowed me to push myself without breaking the bank AND had the added benefit of being a chipped run so my time was much more accurate. I started slow, which is a bit of a victory in itself for me, with a 9 minute mile for the first mile, but then fell into a great pace and ended the 5 mile run with a final pace of 8:20-ish. I was surprised how great I felt going through the race and how in tune with my body I was. I knew when I could push and when to ease up on the throttle. The next test is on March 19th when I do a 10k in Bluemont Virginia.
Now for the trip to Iceland! What a highlight this is. I purchased the trip for my wife as a Christmas/Valentines Day present and I think it is safe to say it’s the best gift I have ever gotten her. We left on a Wednesday night and arrived in Iceland on Thursday morning. Our hotel room was not ready so we explored Reykjavik a bit. What a cute and happening little city! I can say that I have never felt safer walking around and the people of Iceland are some of the most friendly I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. After a quick nap, we explored the city further and I fell in love with it. We went to a great restaurant (recommended by Annie) called Sushi Samba. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Iceland, the food was spectacular and the service was second to none. I can now cross duck off my list of delicious animals to eat.
Day 2 started with a 5k (3 mile) walk to CrossFit Reykjavik alllllll the way on the other side of town. We did not mind the walk, we kept saying it was our warm up. When we arrived our wish came true and there at the gym was Iceland Annie Thorisdottir. She was the most pleasant person to talk to, so welcoming and warm; she made us feel right at home at her gym. I can say that she is more beautiful in person than in pictures. I’ll be honest when I say that I was a little bit star struck. Though Karen was also star struck I think she was eyeing up her boyfriend. She even let us take a great picture with her and hte CrossFit Reykjavik logo in the background. Following our encounter with her, we took a great class though it was rather interesting as they spoke Icelandic during the introductions. The coach was nice though and after talking to the class, she would come to the side and speak with us to make sure we understood what she was talking about. We did and we had a great experience with her as a coach. Following the class we had a long walk back to our hotel before heading out on a hunt for the Northern Lights.
I will stop here and leave this at “To Be Continued” but I promise that I will add much more in the very near future!
