Lately I have been slacking with my blog updates, this is not intentional but more a result of a busy schedule.  After being called out by the wife on her blog, I know this has to start changing. Below is a brief on workout 16.3 which had both a great up and a low down.  Let’s start with the up and end with the downer. When 16.3 was announced I was angry!  I had finally worked up to getting multiple ring muscle ups in a row and was ready for them…then came the bar muscle up curve ball.  While I CAN do them, I can not string them together and fail frequently.  I heard the announcement and thought, well a score of 26 (2 rounds) would be a good goal for myself.

CrossFit Open 16.3
7 minute AMRAP
10 snatches (75 lb)
3 Bar Muscle ups

The following morning, a friend of mine and someone who I like to “compete” against finished with a score of 62 (4 rounds + 10 snatches).  Crap, if he “only” got 4 rounds well maybe I wont even get 2. Due to a travel commitment, I had to do the workout alone on Friday during the open gym lunch hour.  I felt strong, I felt ready.  Then I started and holy crap..I could get through the first round..then the second!   I had a great pace with only one failure.  Maybe a bit too much rest but overall I felt great.  I ended with a score of 63.  Not fantastic, but not terrible by any stretch.  Watch my first round here: https://www.facebook.com/crossfithydraulic/videos/832860096836749/

So that was my “up”.

The weekend was fantastic, I got an amazing workout at CrossFit Sound Beach in Connecticut on Saturday. A workout I usually avoid combined with something I love to try, and in a format that would work on one of my goats.  We did “clean Karen”, 15 rounds 10 wall balls 1 heavy clean.  I chose 185 pounds because that is a very heavy weight for me (roughly 85-90% 1rm).  But I finished the workout in 15:49 and did all the wall balls unbroken and felt great doing it.  That is a huge win for me.  Following the workout we did a great little celebration with the in-laws and family.  It was great seeing everyone and wishing a happy first birthday to my youngest son.

The next day Karen had a 5 mile running race.  She did amazingly well, under a 9 minute pace and pushed herself the entire time!  It was actually nice waiting for her to finish because it was at a beach and was super relaxing and nice out.  It was a moment of zen that I sorely needed before the hell that was the commute home.20160313_094816

The commute home was long and involved a stop at my family for a quick cake and ice cream celebration.  So to say my eating was off might be an understatement.  My sleep was also wrecked because of daylight savings. But I had Monday to redo the workout and try to apply what I learned the first time.   I went into the workout optimistic that I could bang though more muscle ups much faster.  3…2…1…go!  Off I go, and string together 3 mu’s in a row the first round…then again in the second round!  Woo go me.  I’m 40 seconds ahead of my pace…BUT my muscle ups feel less efficient than on Friday.  I’m not getting the pop from my hips that I was getting.  I’m chicken winging all of them. The 4th round hits and I just stop being able to hit any.  Like almost none.  I gather myself and make it through the round.  Only to have to rush through the snatches.  I end up with the identical score as before except for being like 3 seconds faster on the tie break.  Technically I improved but not how I had hoped.  Below is the video, and here are some notes after re-watching.

  1. I do NOT need that much chalk.  What the hell am I doing?
  2. Why couldn’t I fight harder for the final muscle ups, I’m there just need to fight
  3. I don’t need THAT much rest.
  4. I did better when my hands were separated a bit more.
  5. Seriously, why did I keep walking back to the chalk bucket?!?

Hope to post soon on my feelings as we just crossed the halfway point in the open.  Also an update on the year of Cardio!
