CrossFit Open WOD 13.1 is in the books.  I am excited to say that I got 118 reps, 18 of which were 135 lb snatches.  My score was a big improvement over last years 5 reps at 135 lbs.  Below are some of my thoughts before, during, and after the WOD

13-1

BEFORE

Immediately after the workout was released Wednesday night I set a goal in my head of completing the round of 135lb snatches.  Then I started watching Dan Bailey go through the workout… I might want to re-think this goal.  Last year I was only able to get 5 135lb snatches and that was without 70 burpees prior.  So I reset my goal to 15 of the 135 lb snatches, then someone I have a friendly bet with went and banged out 23 of them…but I knew going in that his strength was…well..his strength.  Regardless..I reset my goal to 23 of the 135 lb snatches.

Strategy

 plp

I went in thinking I would use the PLP strategy.  PLP stands for Pepe le Pew.  Anyone familiar with the Looney Toons knows that Pepe is a sexual predator who wears out his “prey” by keeping a constant, albeit slow, pace while the woman sprints away but gets worn out quickly.  Although slow and steady does not win the race, fast and inconsistent does even worse so I thought about using this PLP methodology.

DURING

Due to work, I had to wait until the last possible day to complete the workout.  I got to the gym and made sure to get a great warm up in where I got my heart rate up and stretched a bit.  To get my confidence up, I worked on my 135 lb snatch.

3,2,1…go!  Burpees..ok this is not that bad.  Took Kurt’s advice and stepped them all up to avoid getting to overly winded, stuck with the PLP method. Got to the bar for the 30 75lb snatches, and did them 5 at a time.  Tried to limit my time resting but still took me until the 5:30 mark to finish these.  Then back to the burpees…

These 30 burpees were the worst burpees I’ve ever done.  I felt like death.  It took me quite a while to get back to the bar to change weights.  I took my sweet old time on the switch.  I chalked up and tried to shake the fear of failure from my mind.   I failed I believe 3-4 times, o ne time I just had to let out a loud meathead yell which I call senor denis.  It made me so angry to fail.  To see 7 minutes go to zero and only have a number like 18 was embarrassing.

AFTER

I hurt.  Both mentally and physically.  As the day went on my mental state improved..physical state did not.  I got tighter and tighter but I convinced myself that I did okay.  I ended the day very happy with my results, I took 6 months off from CrossFit this year and was still able to make some fantastic gains since last year.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The best part of this workout was the atmosphere.  I saw my wonderful Wife (Digital Mustard) push herself harder than I’ve ever seen her push herself, and I’ve seen her compete in 2 Triathlons.  She was not happy with her first score so she re-did it on Sunday and improved by 12 reps!  I was astonished!  I also saw 2 guys nail a 165 lb snatch with only seconds to spare.  But most of all I saw a gym come together.  South Mountain CrossFit is a new box, only opened in December, but the people act like they’ve known each other for years.  Everyone was cheering each other on, and even if someone could not make it the social media responses to each other were fantastic.  I know for a fact that the owners are extremely proud of each and every one of their members and how they are working hard.

Also today, I looked and checked on Bob Harper, thinking he has killed me I was pleasantly surprised to see that he actually only got 112 reps!  Woo #beatbob is back!
