It started as a joke. What kind of couple would spend their anniversary in workout clothes and sweating in front of all their friends? Would this be romantic enough? What about a candlelit dinner with a bottle of wine, would that be more appropriate?
Simply put…no it would not.
One of many things I love about my wife and our relationship is our willingness to do the non-traditional. Sure there is a time and place for the RoCo style date, but last night was not the night for it. Working out is especially appropriate when you consider that two years ago we celebrated our love on a cruise vacation, only to come home and look at the pictures. It was a big wake up call. Both of us HATED the way we looked. I had a bloated fat face, and Karen just did not like how she felt in her bikini. It was those pictures that led us to CrossFit in the first place. Ever since then we have not looked back.
Luckily for us, we have an amazing gym community who helped us celebrate our anniversary! Trainer Kurt joked about bringing in champagne and having the loser of the head to head match up take a cupcake to the face….or we thought it was a joke. Half-way through the day yesterday Kurt texted me that he posted on the website about us…and in that post was a picture of cupcakes and champagne.
It was on!
The workout ended up being:
7 minute AMRAP
3 Clean and Jerks (135 lbs / 95 lbs for women)
3 Toes to Bar
6 C+J
6 T2B
9 C+J
9 T2b
….
We posed for some pictures before the workout and then it was time!
Rather than go into all the details of the workout, I’ll just say it was one that I paced pretty well but I think I could do a bit better. My quads were still burning from the double Karen I had done the previous weekend. I’m going to take a day off and head back at it Friday night to try and reach 70. My final score was 59..one rep short of finishing the round of 12. Not terrible, but not anything I’m super proud of either.
After the workout it was time to put a cupcake in the face of Digital Mustard…she though, had different plans…..
Final Thoughts
We had a great time celebrating with so many great people and are very thankful to the trainers for the balloon, cupcakes, and champagne. Best of luck to EVERYONE going at 13.4, I think the weight can be REALLY heavy to a lot of people. I already heard a story of someone getting a score of 1…and that 1 is so much more impressive than the 111 Spealler put up. The heart and work put into that 1 rep was prolly amazing to see. I remember when 135 thought like a literal ton to me, I know that those struggling with that weight today will look at it next year as something they can do easily.
